For many of us in the online business world, education is constant. In fact, some days it may even seem never ending. But this is actually a good thing. These days, the Internet changes so rapidly, that a method that worked well a month ago, may now be obsolete and in its place is something new and shiny. But the question remains as to how to keep up with your education in online business?

One of the first things you can do is take stock of your newsletters and ezine subscriptions twice a month. If you find that a particular newsletter is not providing you with the information you want, or you find (as I have) that you’ve got two or more subscriptions that tell you the same thing, unsubscribe. After all, you only need to be told once right?

Similarly, if you find that a newsletter or ezine you’ve signed up for is not delivering what you expected, trash it. You certainly won’t be hurting the marketer’s feelings and your inbox will thank you.

Another method you should use to keep information overload at bay is, set aside a specific time to read up on your subject. Whether it is before breakfast or the last thing you do before bed, keep this time sacred if at all possible. As well as developing the habit of continually learning, you also help shore up your schedule as it will become a part of your daily routine.

Pick something. Try to focus on ONE specific method or technique for that particular day. It doesn’t really matter what it is, so long as it is the ONLY thing you focus on. If you feel like reading up on the latest Pay Per Click technique, go ahead. Or if you feel that learning more about keywor research is better, do that. But only do one or the other, not both. Why? This allows your mind to focus on the one thing and truly absorb and understand it.

Another thing you can do is read for overall content, also known as scanning. If you’ve ever been to a website that had a long sales letter or article, you probably didn’t read the whole thing. Instead, you may have scanned the headlines and sub-headers to get an overall look at what it was about. You also scanned the content.

As you do this, cut and paste (if you’re reading online) or highlight things that you may want to go back to your explore more fully. This way, you make effective use of your time, while setting up other avenues to increase your knowledge. By learning these few key things you can be sure you will find success in your online business.

How To Achieve Solid Search Engine Optimization

As a business owner, you know that there are literally a million and one things that demand your attention on a daily basis. From employee issues, taxes, product, and customer service, skip on any one of them and you will pay a price in terms of lost customer loyalty, absenteeism from employees and other issues. One thing that must not escape your attention, especially if you wish to succeed online is search engine optimization for your business website.

What is search engine optimization though? SEO as it is usually called is the practice of analyzing and tweaking the copy of a given site (and in some cases the code) to give it more weight with search engine such as Google, Yahoo! and Microsoft’s Live. There are many techniques that can be used, but I’m going to focus on two today.

First, the best start you can have in the SEO game is by going over what are called meta tags. These are tags within the structure (code) of your site that do not display on the browswer screen but are instead “read” by the search engine spiders. Examples of some meta tags include:

Proper use of meta tags will go a fair way to ensuring that your site gets ranked in the category you want it in. As such it is important to spend the time and target your keywords properly as this will be the first thing the search engine spiders will see and is the first step in the search engine optimization process.

The next step is the site copy itself. The first thing you should focus on is the tag. What is that? Take a look at the top left side of your browser. See the text there? That text is there courtesy of the title tag. Think of it as a site description. Here again, you’ll want to do more than just list keywords. Instead, use a “hook.” An example of this would be “Widgets, Bad for Your Health?” What this does when it shows up in the search results is it targets your keyword and it will cause readers to click, wanting to know more. Controversy is always a good hook.

The idea here is to try to think like your prospective reader or customer and NOT just like the search engines. Given that search engine optimization is as much about good, cohesive content as it is the right keyword research, this is something that you really need to watch.

Beyond that you will want to ensure that your copy includes liberal use of your keywords without over doing it. Old tricks such as making tons of keywords super small or the same color as the background on the page will no longer work and the search engines will penalize you for it. If you just stick with providing relevant, timely, keyword rich content your readership and ranking will grow over time. And this is the point of a good search engine optimization strategy.

Personal Accountability in Sales Management Training

For over 200 years the US Constitution has served as the system of fundamental laws and principles of our society. This amazing document has served as the cornerstone of our democracy. A reflection of our Founding Fathers’ core values, the Constitution has kept our society on track since 1787, and has certainly contributed significantly to the growth and success of the United States.

What is the Constitution of your sales team?

Have you, as yet, identified and communicated your cornerstone? If I was to ask five of your salespeople to describe to me what is expected of them in areas other than sales results would I receive five different answers?

The Production Equation: B+A=R.

Behavior plus activities equals sales results. Or, another way of saying this is that every successful sale is the outcome of a series of behaviors (how something is done) as well as activities (how many times a behavior is performed).

Unfortunately, many of us sales managers try to manage results. We wait until a rep has a bad month before we decide to get involved in “coaching” them. So then, when a rep produces a bad month, we rush over and smother them in coaching trying and get their production back up quickly. Sales managers who try to manage results are like a driver of an automobile who only looks in the rear view mirror… chances are they will be surprised when they collide with something that is unexpected. Looking only in the rear view mirror is not an effective way to drive a car, but it happens to be the way that many sales managers drive their sales teams.

Sales results can’t be managed, but behaviors and activities can.

To be the best sales manager you must get in front of the result, get the best sales management training possible, and put in writing your expectations of the behaviors and activities that contribute to sales results. 

Think of this issue – a team without well-communicated performance standards - from your salesperson’s perspective. As a salesperson, you have a clear understanding of the sales quota results expected of you, but you’re unsure exactly how to produce those results. So you do what you think you should. You “make it up on the fly.” Then, because nobody tells you you’re doing it wrong you assume it is acceptable behavior. So you keep doing it, and form bad habits. It’s an unproductive cycle.

How to Draft your Sales Team’s Constitution

Think of your top salesperson… what specific behaviors does he/she do that contributes to sales success? For example, “makes at least five new business prospecting calls every day.” Then, what attitudinal qualities does he/she have which contributes to success? For example, “attempts to solve problems before seeking help.”

Make a list of behaviors and activities that describe your top salesperson, and then share this list with everyone on your sales team. Have each of your salespeople assess themselves on a quarterly basis against these behaviors and activities: Meets, Exceeds, Needs Improvement. Then, sit down one-on-one with each salesperson, discuss his/her self assessment, and put a plan in place to improve those.

Four Components of a Sales Constitution are as follows:

  • Written
  • Well communicated
  • Understood by everybody
  • Equally applied

Training employees to go green at work

By now, going green has proven to be more than just a passing fad. It’s how many businesses are improving the energy efficiency of the buildings they work in, the sustainability of the products they produce and reducing their overall carbon footprint on the earth.

It’s been shown that going green at work helps businesses not only save money on their monthly electric bill, but also has them looking more appealing in the eye of consumers.

The energy used in commercial buildings and manufacturing plants accounts for almost half of all U.S. greenhouse gas emissions and nearly 50 percent of energy consumption nationwide, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

Because it’s where most Americans spend the majority of their day, the workplace where we can make the biggest impact by going green. Training employees to reduce office waste and conserve energy can take time, but the payoff is worth it.

Get everyone in your organization on-board and involved in a green movement to save the company money and save the earth’s natural resources by following these six steps:

  1. Set up green teams. Gather employees form different levels and departments within the organization to lead your program. Forming a diverse team with employees from all levels will ensure greater support and success of your program overall.
  2. Organize green team meetings. Set up a regular time each week or month where your green team can get together and discuss new projects. Identify areas within the business that are the least efficient and brainstorm what could be done to improve it.
  3. Raise awareness. Send emails, hand out fliers and hang posters with information on how the business is going green and how every employee can get involved. Encourage employees to share their green ideas with the green team member in their department.
  4. Hold an event. Get employees involved and informed by holding a green event in the office. From brown bag lunches to outdoor picnics, find a way to get everyone excited and aware of the organizations new green efforts. If possible, invite a green expert to come in and talk about ways to save energy around the office.
  5. Make it fun. Find ways to make your green movement fun by making it competitive. Divide employees by department or team and start a competition to see who can be the most green around the office. Competitions can range from collecting the most soda cans to conserving the most printer paper, get creative with it.
  6. Reward their efforts. After each competition, hand out environmentally-friendly prizes such as reusable water bottles or coffee mugs to the teams that show the greatest improvement. Publicly recognize teams and individual employees who have gone above and beyond to go green at work.

Going green in the office doesn’t have to be something that takes up a lot of time or effort. With the support of upper management, starting a green movement in your organization can be fun and help the company save money.
